Student Success Summit Gives ֱ a ‘South, Camera, Action’ Blueprint for Success
Posted on August 27, 2025

ֱ at the University of South Alabama got a blueprint for a successful college career at the 2025 Student Success Summit. The event, hosted by Student Academic Success, the Black Faculty and Staff Association and the Second Year Experience, was held on Aug. 18 during Week of Welcome at the McQueen Alumni Center and was designed to help students connect with key resources and build community.
This year's speaker was Japonica Brown, a motivational speaker, author and actress who owns and manages I Am Japonica Enterprise and Mobile's Samuel Edward Theater Company. Using the analogy of how a film is made, Brown walked students through the steps to creating their own successful college experience.
“Japonica Brown was engaging and empowering while connecting with our students during her presentation,” said Autumn Courtney, Second Year-Experience program coordinator and chair of the Student Success Summit Planning Committee. “This summit is designed to give students tangible strategies and resources to help them navigate their academic and personal lives.”
The Student Success Summit aims to equip students with the knowledge, tools and connections they need for a successful journey at South.
